Bike maintenance workshop helps members tune up

JillNews

Sixteen VMDAS/VPSA members and their guests got the opportunity to learn from the HUB Cycling pros how to keep their bikes in tip-top shape just in time for Go By Bike Week. It was a beautiful day and the courtyard at the MSAC was a great venue with plenty of room for everyone’s bicycles.

Dr. Rachel Vogler, who brought her dad as her guest, made introductory remarks before the workshop got underway. Dr. Vogler is a new and avid cyclist; she talked about her journey from non-cyclist to keen commuter and rider.

HUB provided two facilitators who went over the ABCs of bike maintenance:

  • A for air and learning about correct tire choice, maintenance and air pressure
  • B for brakes
  • C for chains and gears

Participants got hands-on instruction for basic upkeep and maintenance that will keep bike components lasting longer and performing better.

Feedback to the event was enthusiastic with survey responders giving a rousing 77.78 net promoter score. Everyone agreed that they learned something new or felt that their bike maintenance skills improved during the workshop and most strongly agreed that the event supported their well-being.

Comments included:

  • This was a fantastic idea for a wholesome and educational activity that promoted wellness and sustainability. My guest and I enjoyed it very much and really learned some great tips about bike maintenance!
  • Lots of fun and very useful.
  • Perhaps offer a bit more of an advanced workshop in changing wheels and tires, adjusting gears that have become difficult to shift into.
