Dr. Bonita Sawatzky, an associate professor of Orthopaedics, was one of the original principal investigators in 2008 of ICORD. She has worked in spinal cord injury research and is now the director of READI (Respect, Equity, Accessibility, Diversity and Inclusion) for the Department of Orthopaedics at UBC. She is a dedicated teacher in UBC’s Faculty of Medicine, working with medical students, residents and graduate students. 
Dr. Julia Hanes is a fourth-year Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation resident at UBC. She is a keen advocate for medical students and residents with disabilities and has shaped policies for this group both locally and nationally, including medical student event accessibility policies. Dr. Hanes is an active member of the Canadian Association of Physicians with Disabilities and is co-leading the development of a national curriculum on disability. Outside of medicine, she is a Paralympic athlete, having recently returned from competing at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.

Register by December 15 for the Men's Staff and Medical Staff EDI Affinity & Allyship Group 2025
The VCH Medical Staff Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee is further developing its Men’s Staff and Medical Staff EDI Affinity & Allyship Group.
This group will meet and explore the intersections of gender, race, and other diversity experiences in the contexts of our work as health-care providers. We’ll meet over a series of four sessions as a cohort on January 15 and 29, February 12 and 26, 2025. A light dinner will be provided. Dinner/connecting begins at 6 pm; formal session time is 6:30 - 8. Please plan to attend all four sessions.
Topics include Identity, Power/Privilege, Intention/Impact, Micro Aggressions/Colour Blindness and Receiving/Providing Feedback.
Facilitators: Drs. Alexandros Alexiadis and Jay Slater, Regional Manager - Anti Racism Oluwaseun Ajaja, Leadership Coach David Hatfield, and Accountability Partner Angela J. Gray - EDI Facilitator.

VPSA Projects Committee recruiting
VPSA is currently recruiting for two members to join its
Projects Committee to oversee physician-led projects that increase collaboration amongst the physician community and with VCH. Preference is given to those with quality improvement training.
A monthly commitment of 2-3 hours for meetings, events, and responding to emails is required.

Small Steps Big Idea funding available
VPSA's Small Steps, Big Idea funding provides $1,000 to $5,000 to selected applicants to develop concepts that meet VPSA criteria.
